Can Data Be Recovered From a Dead SSD?
Often, yes. Most “dead” SSDs have a failed controller rather than failed memory, and the data is still sitting in the NAND chips. $300 Data Recovery charges a flat $500 for any SSD up to 6TB regardless of its capacity, and $700 above 6TB. There is no charge if we recover nothing.
SSDs are now about one in five of every device we’re asked to recover, so this is well-trodden ground.
Why do SSDs fail without warning?
SSDs fail differently from hard drives. There’s no gradual noise, no clicking, no warning period. They tend to work perfectly and then not at all.
The common failure modes:
- Controller failure. The processor managing the NAND dies. The memory chips are fine and still hold your data, but nothing can address them. This is the most common case by a wide margin.
- Power delivery failure. Failed capacitors or regulators on the board. Again, the NAND is untouched.
- Firmware or translation table corruption. The map from logical addresses to physical NAND locations is damaged. The data is present but the drive can’t locate it.
- Genuine NAND wear. Real, but far rarer than people assume. Modern drives usually go read-only when cells exhaust rather than disappearing.
In the first three, which is most cases, your files are intact.
Why is SSD recovery harder than hard drive recovery?
Because there’s no universal method. Each controller family has its own architecture, its own encryption, and its own way of scattering data across chips.
Nearly all modern SSDs encrypt at the controller level even when the user never enabled encryption. Reading the raw NAND therefore yields nothing usable unless the controller can be revived or its keys recovered. On top of that, wear leveling deliberately fragments your data across every chip, so reconstruction requires reversing the manufacturer’s specific translation scheme.
This is why SSD recovery requires controller-specific tooling and considerably more time than a mechanical drive of the same size.
Why does an SSD cost $500 when a 1TB hard drive is $300?
Because SSD labor doesn’t scale with capacity the way hard drive labor does.
A 256GB SSD needs the same controller-specific tools, the same thermal cycling, and the same individual chip tracing as a 4TB SSD. The hours are effectively identical. Hard drives genuinely do get more expensive to image as they get larger, which is why they stay on capacity tiers.
So $300 Data Recovery prices SSDs at a $500 floor. It reflects the actual work rather than pretending a small SSD is a small job.

Which devices count as an SSD?
The $500 price applies to internal SATA SSDs, M.2 SATA, M.2 NVMe and PCIe, mSATA, external USB SSDs such as the Samsung T7 and Crucial X8, branded portable SSDs including the SanDisk Extreme Portable, internal MacBook SSDs, and modern Macs with soldered SSDs when we recover them in-house.
USB flash drives, SD cards, microSD, CF, CFast, CFexpress and XQD are not SSDs for pricing purposes. They follow the standard capacity tiers, which means $300 for anything 1TB or smaller.
Should I try recovery software on a dead SSD?
If the drive isn’t detected by your computer, no. Software needs a drive to talk to, and there isn’t one.
If the drive is detected but shows as unformatted or empty, software has a genuine chance and is worth trying once, on a read-only basis, without writing anything to the drive.
One SSD-specific warning: do not leave a failing SSD powered and idle. Some controllers run background garbage collection that can permanently erase blocks marked as deleted. Unlike a hard drive, where deleted data lingers, an SSD can actively finish deleting it while you deliberate.
