My Drive Won’t Spin Up. What Does That Mean?
It usually means a mechanical or electrical fault, not lost data. A drive that won’t spin has almost always kept everything written on its platters. $300 Data Recovery charges $300 for a drive 1TB or smaller, $500 up to 6TB, and $700 above that, with no charge if we recover nothing.
Why won’t my hard drive spin up?
Four causes account for nearly all of them:
- Stuck heads. The heads have come to rest on the platter surface instead of parking properly, and stiction holds them there. The motor can’t overcome it. Common after a drop.
- A seized spindle motor. The bearing has failed. Often follows an impact, sometimes just age.
- A failed circuit board. A power surge or a failed component means the drive never receives the command to spin. The mechanics are perfectly fine.
- No power reaching the drive at all. On externals, a failed power adapter or USB bridge board. The drive itself may be untouched.
The last two are electrical, and in those cases the drive is mechanically pristine. That’s a large share of the cases we see.
How do I tell whether it’s actually spinning?
Rest the drive lightly on your open palm and apply power. A spinning drive produces a faint, continuous vibration you can feel through the casing, and often a soft whirring in a quiet room.
If you feel nothing and hear nothing at all, it isn’t spinning. If you feel a brief attempt that stops, that points to stiction or a seizing motor.

What should I not do?
Do not keep applying power hoping it catches. If the heads are stuck to the platters, repeated attempts can tear the head assembly or drag the heads across the surface.
Do not tap, shake or drop the drive to “free” it. This advice circulates widely and it destroys drives. The clearances inside are measured in nanometers.
Do not freeze it. Do not open the cover.
If it’s an external and you have a second known-good power adapter of the correct voltage, trying that once is reasonable. Beyond that, stop.
Can data be recovered from a drive that won’t spin?
Yes, in most cases, and the odds are generally better than for a clicking drive.
A drive that never spins has not been dragging damaged heads across its platters, so the magnetic surfaces are usually untouched. The repair depends on the cause: circuit board faults may need a board swap with the original firmware chip transferred over, stuck heads and seized motors need cleanroom work to free or replace the assembly.
All of that is included in the flat rate. Only donor parts are extra.
