How Do I Tell If My Hard Drive Is Spinning?

Rest the drive flat on your open palm and apply power once. A spinning drive produces a faint, steady vibration you can feel through the casing. If you feel nothing at all, it isn’t spinning, and that single fact tells us a great deal about what failed.

How do I do the test safely?

  1. Put the drive on your open palm, label side up, resting flat. Don’t grip it.
  2. Make the room quiet.
  3. Apply power for about five seconds, then disconnect.
  4. Note what you felt and what you heard.

Do this once, not repeatedly. If the drive has damaged heads, every power cycle carries risk. One controlled test is worth the information. Twenty are not.

What am I feeling for?

  • A steady, faint vibration that continues means the platters are spinning. Externals often mask it more than bare drives, so give it a few seconds.
  • A brief surge that stops means the drive tried and failed. That usually points to stuck heads or a seizing spindle motor.
  • Nothing at all, no vibration and no sound means it isn’t spinning. Common causes are a failed circuit board, a dead power supply, or a seized motor.
  • Vibration plus a repeating click means it’s spinning but the heads can’t read. Stop immediately and see my hard drive is clicking.

Solid-state drives, USB flash drives and memory cards have no moving parts, so none of this applies to them. If your device is an SSD, this test tells you nothing.

Why does it matter?

Spin state is the fastest way to narrow down a failure without opening anything.

A drive that spins normally but isn’t detected usually has a head, firmware or interface problem, and the platters are typically untouched. A drive that doesn’t spin at all points to the motor or the circuit board, and those cases often have pristine platters because the heads never moved.
